Field Notes: How Is Mironcol Health Using AI and microRNA for Early Cancer Detection?

In this Ask AI Field Note recorded at the 2025 SaaS North conference, Gilles Erb, Medical Director at Mironcol Health, explains how their blood-based microRNA test uses PCR and AI-driven pattern detection to identify cancer at stages when treatment is most effective.

Recorded at the 2025 SaaS North conference, this Ask AI Field Note highlights Mironcol Health’s mission to address one of the biggest challenges in oncology: patients being diagnosed far too late.

Their goal is simple and bold, to detect cancer early enough that it’s still curable.

“Using microRNA and AI, we can detect cancer at stage one and stage two with more than 90% sensitivity — without creating a false-positive burden.”Gilles Erb, Medical Director, Mironcol Health

Erb explains that Mironcol’s solution is not a diagnostic tool but an awareness test: a single blood draw performed during routine GP checkups. Using PCR to analyze microRNA signatures and a layer of AI to detect disease-linked patterns, the system can screen for 12 cancer types with very high sensitivity.

Just as important, the test minimizes the risk of false positives — a major issue in cancer screening. In a sample of 11,000 patients, Mironcol demonstrated a specificity above 99%, meaning only 1% false positives and far less unnecessary stress for patients and strain on the healthcare system.

Mironcol Health is now completing its pre-launch phase, finalizing SOPs and lab partnerships, and preparing for a Canada-wide release in Q1 next year.

For Mironcol, the principle is clear:

Early signals save lives, and AI can help us catch them when they’re still curable.
