Field Notes: How is Coraltalk Reimagining Student Assessment For The Era of AI?

Updated: 4 hours ago

With 90% of learning forgotten in a week, two-thirds of students feeling unprepared for real life, and AI now writing most assignments, traditional testing is breaking down. In this Field Note, Coraltalk AI CEO Melissa Morgan explains how voice-native AI is reshaping student assessment.

Quick Summary

Toronto-based Coraltalk is a startup that is redefining student assessments using voice-native AI technology to test real reasoning, communication and true understanding in a world increasingly dominated by AI-generated homework assignments.

The platform evaluates human skills written exams miss, including clarity, confidence and behavioral signals, and is expanding globally with active school deployments and a mobile app arriving soon.

Reimagining Student Assessments with AI

Recorded at the 2025 SaaS North conference, this Ask AI Field Note explores Coraltalk AI's mission to reimagine student assessment for an era where 88% of assignments are written by AI and two-thirds of students feel unprepared for real life.

Their goal is to help students demonstrate true understanding, not just produce AI-generated homework.

“Students speak, Coraltalk listens, gives instant feedback, and surfaces real-time insights. We’re scaling the gold standard of assessment with AI, oral exams, and role plays.” - Melissa Morgan, CEO & Co-founder, Coraltalk AI

Morgan explains that Coraltalk is designed to measure the skills written assignments can miss, things like clarity, reasoning, confidence, and the non-verbal cues that make up most human communication.

Today’s LLMs can’t fully evaluate pauses, hesitations, eye contact, or body language, so Coraltalk plans to build its own model that can.

The platform is already live in five schools, including locations in Canada and Saudi Arabia, with partnerships emerging in Colombia, Turkey, Switzerland, and France.

Currently available on desktop, the mobile version is coming soon.

For Coraltalk, the principle for AI in education is simple:

In an age of AI-generated homework, Coraltalk is rebuilding assessment around the one thing students can’t outsource: their own reasoning.
